Track local pack rankings with a geo-grid, not a single position
Local pack tracking only works when you measure from many points across your service area, not one location. The Google local pack — those three business listings with a map that sit above the organic results — does not behave like a normal SERP. Your position changes block by block, because Google ranks the pack on relevance, distance, and prominence, and distance is a continuous variable. You can sit at #1 right outside your storefront and vanish from the top three half a mile away. A single tracked point reports you as winning or losing more or less at random, depending on where the pin happens to sit. The only measurement that tells the truth is a grid of points spread across the area you serve.

Why a single local pack "position" is meaningless
Run the search "emergency plumber" from inside a plumber's office and they'll often show #1 in the pack. Walk to a café three blocks away, search again, and they may drop to #4 or off the pack entirely. Nothing about the business changed in those five minutes. What changed was the searcher's coordinates.
Google's own documentation names three local ranking factors — relevance, distance, and prominence (Google Business Profile Help, "Improve your local ranking on Google"). Relevance and prominence are roughly stable hour to hour. Distance is not: it recalculates for every searcher's location. So the pack is less a leaderboard and more a heat map that you've sampled at a single pixel.
This is the core difference from organic. A single organic position for "best running shoes" is a defensible number because the ten blue links are fairly consistent across a city. The pack isn't. Report one local pack number to a client and you're reporting noise dressed up as a metric. This is also distinct from ordinary rank fluctuation — the pack isn't drifting over time so much as it's genuinely different in every spot at the same instant.
Build a geo-grid: the actual method
A geo-grid rank tracker checks your ranking from many simulated locations laid out in a grid around your business, then plots the result at each point. Here's how to set one up that reflects your real service area.
- Center on your business, not the city. Drop the grid's center on your storefront's GPS coordinates. Your visibility radiates outward from there because of the distance factor.
- Pick a grid size that matches how far customers travel. A dentist whose patients come from a 3 km radius needs a tighter grid than an emergency electrician covering a whole metro. Common setups are 5x5, 7x7, or 9x9 points.
- Set the spacing deliberately. In a dense city center, 0.5 km between points captures real variation. In a spread-out suburb, 1–2 km is more honest. Too tight and you waste checks; too wide and you miss the cliff edge where you fall out of the pack.
- Run the same query string at every point. "physiotherapist near me" or "physiotherapist in Indiranagar" — keep it constant so the grid is comparable.
- Record the pack position at each pin (1, 2, 3, or not-in-pack), and store it so you can compare grids week over week.
The output is a grid of numbers — say, a sea of green 1s and 2s near the office fading to grey "not ranked" at the edges. That picture is the metric. One cell of it would have been the lie.
Read coverage and radius, not just the average
Once you have a grid, the temptation is to average it into a single "3.2" and call it done. Don't. Two numbers matter more.
- Coverage: the share of grid points where you appear in the top three at all. A business at #1 across 60% of its grid is in far better shape than one bouncing between #1 and #6 with 90% coverage but no consistency.
- Effective radius: how far from your storefront you still hold a pack slot before dropping off. This is your real market boundary, which is often tighter than the area you assume you serve.
Track both over time. If you add citations, earn reviews, and your effective radius grows from 1.2 km to 2.0 km, that's a result you can show a client — concrete, visual, and impossible to fake. Separate the three things people lump together
"Local rankings" actually means three different result sets, and mixing them produces garbage data.

A business can be #2 in the pack, #11 in the Local Finder, and #6 in organic for the same query. Reporting one as if it were the others is a common and costly mistake. Track them as three streams. Device, location, and frequency for pack tracking
A few settings decide whether your grid reflects reality.
